Noise is a persistent and important environmental pollutant that causes a good deal of annoyance and stress. Though noise levels are comparatively easy to monitor, the response to noise is far from simple and remains illunderstood. To understand the response we need to understand not only the physical variables that characterise the stimulus but also the psychophysiological variables that control the response. Research is developing rapidly and the UK Departments of Health and the Environment, Transport and the Regions recently launched a research initiative in this area. As our understanding of the factors controlling the response to noise improves more appropriate standards for levels of environmental noise might be set. It is possible that these will need to be framed in a more complex form than used at present: depending for example on location and on more subtle measures than average noise levels expressed in terms of a weighted intensity scale. It is encouraging that this journal 'Noise and Health' has been launched with the publication of work in this area as one of its aims.
